Top 10 GPS for July 2008

Once again, there were only minor changes in this month's top ten GPS list, though there was one anomaly. As I always state, the rankings are based on the number of times each review has been read here on GPS Tracklog, which is usually a pretty good indicator of the overall GPS market. This month however, my Navigon 2100 max review got linked to from Woot! and I was inundated with traffic. Otherwise, it wouldn't have made the top ten. (It currently ranks number 34 on Amazon's bestselling GPS list, which gets skewed itself because it's updated hourly.) On the sport / handheld GPS side, the top ten stayed the same, with a few units switching positions.

There were only minor changes in this month's top ten GPS list. The Garmin nuvi 200W and 760 bumped the TomTom GO 920 and Garmin StreetPilot c550 from the auto list. On the sport / handheld GPS side, the Venture HC pushed the DeLorme PN-20 out of the number 10 spot.

As usual, the rankings are based on the number of times the units' reviews have been read here on GPS Tracklog, which seems to be a pretty good indicator of the overall GPS market.

There were some minor changes in this month's top ten GPS list. A Garmin nuvi, the 260W, returns to the top spot on the auto side, bumping the Magellan Maestro 4250 into second place. The StreetPilot c550 cracking the top ten is a bit of a surprise, as it is the only auto GPS on the list without a flat form factor.

On the sport / handheld GPS side, we picked up a couple of recent introductions, the Forerunner 405 and Edge 705.

There aren't a whole of changes in this month's top ten GPS list. Magellan retains the number one auto spot although various Garmin nuvi models make up the majority of the rankings. Meanwhile, TomTom returns to the rankings with the GO 920/920T.

On the sport / handheld GPS side, the Magellan Triton 1500 got knocked out by the Edge 305. I expect we'll see one (or both) of the new Edge cycling units show up on next month's list.

I've been doing a monthly top ten list for nearly two years now and this is the first time Magellan has occupied the top spot, and I'm a little shocked. I certainly can't attribute it to the strength of their review ratings. This follows last month's shake-up which saw TomTom drop out of the top ten entirely. Otherwise though, there have been few changes in last month's top 10 sport / handheld GPS and top ten auto GPS lists, shown below.

There were a few changes in last month's top 10 sport / handheld GPS and top ten auto GPS lists, shown below. The big surprise to me is TomTom dropping completely off the list after having three models represented in January. On the handheld side, the Garmin Colorado 300 made a big splash, entering the top ten list at number 2.

There was very little change in this month's top 10 sport / handheld GPS and top ten auto GPS lists, shown below. The only change, in fact, was the Mio C520 knocking the Magellan Maestro 3100 out of tenth place in the auto category.

We'll see more shifts over the next few months, as new handhelds and auto units start making their way into the marketplace (and I get new reviews posted!).

This month's top ten GPS list showcases some holiday shopping trends, as seen in the top 10 sport / handheld GPS and top ten auto GPS lists below. Entry level GPS units did well last month, as newbies flooded the marketplace.  TomTom showed up with three variants of its ONE units; a couple of 200 series nuvis made the grade, as did the Magellan Maestro 3100.

There wasn't a lot of change in the units represented, though things did shift around a bit. The nuvi 260 knocked the Mio C520 out of the auto ranks, while the Magellan CrossoverGPS bumped the Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx from the handheld list.

Newer reviews often don't crack the top ten, due to their showing up later in the month, so I've appended a list of new GPS reviews for December to the end of this post.

Giving us a peek at popular units this holiday shopping season, listed below are the top 10 sport / handheld and top ten auto GPS receivers for November. 

The Garmin nuvi 650 vaulted into the number one auto GPS spot, showing a lot of search interest due to some $300 deals, which may yet reappear before the holidays are over. To keep an eye out for such bargains, subscribe to GPS Tracklog (see right sidebar) or watch here for holiday deals.

On the less volatile handheld side, the only change was the DeLorme PN-20 moving up to the number six spot.

Listed below are the top 10 sport / handheld and top ten auto GPS receivers for October. 

Among auto units, the Garmin nuvi 250 climbed into the top ten, at the expense of the TomTom GO 720. This is not surprising, now that the Garmin nuvi 200 series is finally dropping closer to entry-level prices.

On the handheld side, the Garmin 60Cx bumped the Vista Cx out of the top ten.
