Garmin nuvi 465T screenshots

Garmin's nuvi 465T page is up, and they've posted screenshots which will give you hard-working truckers an idea of how the interface will work. First of all, note the squiggly road warning in the lower-left section of the screen above. Tapping it probably brings up a detailed warning screen as seen below.

You can also see that warnings show up in the next turn ahead field in the upper left, below.

Finally, we have the main menu screen. I don't recall seeing the route option show up on this screen on other nuvis; I just tried and couldn't bring it up on the nuvi 885T that I'm currently testing. Also note the truck icon at the top of the screen, which seems to indicate that you can easily take it out of truck mode for times when you are using the 465T in the family car.

Its too bad that the 465t isn't MSN Direct compatable, I think that truckers would benifit from the MSN Doppler overlay as well as the updated fuel prices, etc.

iPhone OS 3.0 and turn-by-turn navigation Apple unveiled the iPhone 3.0 operating system yesterday and there were a couple of interesting mapping and navigation announcements as part of the show. Turn-by-turn navigation First of all, they opened the door to turn-by-turn navigation apps, as long as the developer uses their own maps. Expect to see application announcements soon from TomTom / Tele Atlas and also from TeleNav. Garmin will be faced with an interesting dilemma. Do they develop an iPhone app, which would be quite the revenue generator if it became the top navigation app (not a high bar for Garmin). Or would that just encourage Garmin-lovers to skip the nuvifone and get an iPhone instead? But can you make calls too? Unless I missed something in the coverage yesterday, the iPhone won’t be able to run apps in the background, meaning you can be in navigation mode or making calls, but not both at the same time. Score one for the nuvifone. Google Maps While developers can’t use Google Maps for turn-by-turn navigation, they can use them for other applications. A new Maps API will allow them to integrate Google Mobile Maps services, offering Google Map tiles, current location, custom annotations and geocoding.

TomTom Map Update Service TomTom has officially announced the availability of its Map Update ServiceTM for U.S. and Canadian consumers, allowing access to one year of quarterly map updates, for a one-time fee as low as $39.80, or $9.95 per map release. All map updates are available for download through TomTom HOME, TomTom’s desktop software application. New maps become available every quarter for the duration of a user’s subscription, and each map update incorporates all changes in the road network that have been validated by Tele Atlas. Subscribers will be alerted to download the latest map update as soon as they are available. The Map Update Service is available to all TomTom customers, with subscription prices for US and Canada Maps. Prices will vary depending on the TomTom device model. GPSReview.net has reported that you will need to have or upgrade to the latest map before being able to subscribe.
