Details on Garmin nuvi 1200 and 1300 series

A little more information is trickling out on the Garmin nuvi 1200 and 1300 series units that were announced yesterday. One of the more interesting things is this tidbit -- with an "enhanced user interface, you can slide your finger to conveniently scroll between screens." I wonder if screen order can be customized.

Nuvi 1390T usage mode

The bad news is -- no multi-destination routing and no paperless geocaching support. It appears that the speed limit display is found on all models other than the 49 state 1200 and 1300 models. I've also learned that there is no compass screen, something I thought would have been included on a pedestrian navigation device. It will be interesting to see how easy (or difficult) it is to orient oneself with these units.

With these new models that are 25% thinner than previous nuvis, Garmin has another hardware platform. Expect to see more models (with high-end features) built on this platform, though perhaps not until fall.

Rich: what about a track (trip) log--do they have the record feature like some of the other recent nuvis?

It's not listed on their feature chart, but I assume so, since even the 2x5 series has it.

It would be nice if they listed it as a N/Y feature on their Spec table, including for discontinued models, as we get a lot of people asking us if their nuvi will record ski tracks for our Snow Days service. Mind you, battery life seems to be getting worse, not better, on nuvis, and they won't get half a day out of a full charge. I am sure most nuvis never leave people's cars, but it might be more of an issue now they are pushing this public transport feature.

Pedestrian-friendly Garmin nuvi 1200 and 1300 series Garmin has announced eight (!) new nuvi models that come with urban pedestrian navigation enhancements. Significantly thinner than previous models, "the nüvi 1200 and 1300 series are the first nüvi devices to offer pedestrian navigation capability enabled through optional CityXplorer™ maps. CityXplorer maps are available for select tourist destinations in both North America and Europe, and can easily be downloaded directly to the nüvi." Available as a download for select cities, CityXplorer allows the user to plan and use routes that can include public transit options such as bus, tramway, metro and suburban rail systems. Content from CityXplorer will range from $9.99 - $14.99, depending on the city. It will be interesting to see how good of a job Garmin does with pedestrian navigation. We know from their outdoor products that they can nail this, but I was less than impressed with the dual-use nuvi 500 series. Garmin Oregon 500 series REI has inadvertently leaked information on a forthcoming update to the Garmin Oregon handheld lineup -- the Oregon 500 series. It's unclear whether these will be the 500 and 500t or the 550 and 550t, but it does appear that they will include a built-in camera like the Magellan Triton series. We're assuming this will give you the ability to take geotagged photos. This could help explain the $50 rebate (PDF) on the current Oregon series, which expires May 10.
