Top ten GPS for December 2008

Our December rankings are in, with few surprises. There are a couple of notable, albeit pricey, absences from the lists though -- the nuvi 7x5T series and the Garmin Oregon handheld -- which probably says more about the state of the economy than the desire for high-end toys.

Also note that despite the strong showing of the aggressively priced TomTom ONE 125, Garmin pulled off a near sweep of the auto top ten. On the handheld side, it's worth pointing out that DeLorme is now the only company out there really challenging Garmin's dominance in this category.

Like last time, this month's figures are based on how many GPS units have been sold by our partners (Amazon, etc.) via GPS Tracklog and GPS Deals. As a result, the figures are heavily influenced by promotional offerings during the month. As usual, the links below go to our GPS reviews.

Consumer Reports gets lost The February issue of Consumer Reports has hiking GPS recommendations. Their auto GPS rankings have improved markedly lately and I was curious if they would do as well on the handheld side. The short answer is no. And a lot of the problem comes down to a very short article without much in the way of elaboration and caveats. They ranked the Garmin Oregon 400t number one, which is quite reasonable. But then they put the Magellan Triton 2000 in fourth place, ahead of the Garmin 60CSx. Hmm, over at Amazon, the Triton has a 1-1/2 star reviewer rating versus 4-1/2 for the 60CSx. Methinks they botched that one. BizRate CR ends up recommending the Oregon 200 and the eTrex Venture HC; again, quite reasonable suggestions. But the devil is in the details. Or the lack of them. They claim that none of the units can provide turn-by-turn directions, when in fact, several will as long as you load highway maps to them. And they note that the 60CSx has an electronic compass and barometric altimeter, but fail to point out these features on three other units. CR also neglects to mention the Oregon's touch-screen interface, and says the Colorado...

Mio to debut Spirit series at CES? NavReady not ready? Mio's new corporate blog has dropped a hint that they'll be debuting the Spirit interface on some new North American models next week at CES. Previously available in Europe under the Navman label, the Spirit interface offers "Glide Touch," giving ‘tap and slide’ functionality. BizRate If true, this will be the third Mio interface makeover in the past couple of years. Mio had previously announced they were moving to the Microsoft NavReady interface in 2009, but I guess its NotReady.
