Top 10 GPS for November 2008

I'm going to do something a little different this month. Typically these rankings reflect the number of times each review is read, but this month's figures are based on how many GPS units have been sold by our partners (Amazon, etc.) via GPS Tracklog and GPS Deals.

This different method of ranking has resulted in some ties, because rather than thousands of page views, we're often looking at just a few sales of each unit. 

There are some interesting holiday trends emerging here. The market seems to be split between newer models and two budget categories -- entry-level devices and older (often discontinued) units on clearance. There definitely seems to be a trend towards budget units and away from the latest and greatest. As usual, the links below go to our GPS reviews.

The 760 isn't much of an upgrade from the 750 in my opinion, unless you need bluetooth or traffic. Which going by a previous article "5 GPS features you don't need" you probably don't. So I'd save the 50 bucks and go with the 750.

Mio GPS 3.5G handset coming early next year DigiTimes is reporting that Mio will launch a 3.5G handset with GPS during the first quarter of 2009, ahead of the Garmin nuvifone. While nothing was mentioned about this being released in the U.S., Mio was showing off a concept model at CES last year (image via Engadget), so it wouldn't surprise us to see it on this side of the pond.

5 GPS features you don't need GPS receivers are becoming more feature-rich every year. But what works and what doesn't? Here are five features that you just don't need. Traffic - I recently saw that 50% of people with live traffic on their GPS don't use it. Great idea, but it ain't ready for primetime yet. You'll get plenty of erroneous reports, and you'll also come across lots of bottlenecks that go unreported. FM transmitter - Useless in urban areas where the FM band is crowded, but of possible interest to the 0.1% of the population living in rural, mountainous areas. MP3 player - As much as I like seeing the track and artist name on my GPS screen, the tinny speakers aren't made for listening to music. If your GPS has an audio out jack, and your receiver an audio in, you could connect them, but then you'd have cables strung everywhere. TomTom has an iPod control cable for their GO units, but there's that cable thing again. A car stereo with Bluetooth and a nuvi 7x5T unit might give you a better option, but lacking the former I haven't tried it. Bluetooth - When it does work, it generally sounds horrible for the person...
