Top ten GPS for August 2008

There were some breakthroughs in this month's top ten GPS list, with the TomTom XL 330-S and Garmin Oregon 400t debuting in third place, respectively, on the auto and handheld charts. Otherwise, there were only minor changes, though I will note that another new unit, the Garmin nuvi 205W, managed to crack the top ten auto list as well.

As always, the rankings are based on the number of times each review has been read here on GPS Tracklog, which is usually a pretty good indicator of the overall GPS market.

What the SiRF patent dispute means for GPS receivers A U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) judge has recommended that the ITC "bar from importation into the U.S. infringing chips of SiRF Technology," including GPS devcies that have those chipsets in them. The chips have been found to infringe upon Broadcom's patents. The question I have is, how is this going to affect the GPS market? DigiTimes is reporting that Mitac, parent company of Mio, is going to stop using SiRF chipsets in the fourth quarter. I'm no GPS engineer, but here's my take on it. The changeover may be less painful for auto PND manufacturers, since auto devices have a little accuracy leeway due to their "lock to road" feature. For a handheld manufacturer like Magellan though, this could be quite problematic. Garmin, with all of its engineering resources, has struggled with the accuracy of non-SiRF chipsets in their eTrex-H series and Colorado models. And what is to become of the Garmin 60CSx, the popular SiRF-powered handheld that is probably the most accurate consumer unit on the market. Will Garmin have to put another chipset in it? Of course, another possibility is that SiRF will pony up licensing fees and make nice with Broadcom. C'mon you tech types...what do...

GPS news from Berlin IFA, billed as the world's largest consumer electronics show, is about to wrap up in Berlin. While I'm not there to report directly :-(, I do have some odds and ends of GPS news related to the show: The Blaupunkt Travel Pilot 700, shown above, has an integrated video camera on the back, capturing live imagery of the road ahead. Navigation instructions are then superimposed on the imagery on the screen of the device. Drool-worthy? Yes. Destined for the U.S.? No; not yet anyway.Via Navigadget. The rumors about the TomTom GO x40 LIVE series with Google Local search were true. Once again though, only Europeans will see these devices in the short term; there has been no announcement about bringing them to the U.S. Trusted Reviews is reporting that the new Garmin nuvifone target date is April 2009, and that it will be distributed through a single carrier. Navigon is going to make lifetime traffic "standard on a wide range of its new products this fall." They haven't said what this means for products purchased now, but they do say it will be included on entry-level models and across their entire product suite. Finally, here are the anticipated ship dates...
