Garmin Oregon 300 review

The Garmin Oregon 300 is one of Garmin's first touch-screen handhelds for backcountry use. The Oregon 300 comes with a built-in worldwide basemap with shaded relief. Unlike the Oregon 400 series, the 300 doesn't come with pre-loaded detailed maps; it's an excellent choice for someone who already owns a Garmin map product though. Here's how this model compares to other units in the Oregon series:

  • Oregon 200 - Simple basemap, no pre-loaded detailed maps; unlike other Oregon models the 200 has no barometric altimeter or electronic compass
  • Oregon 400t - Built-in topo maps of the United States and a worldwide basemap with shaded relief
  • Oregon 400c - Built-in BlueChart® g2 coastal charts and a worldwide basemap with imagery
  • Oregon 400i - Built-in U.S. Inland Lakes and a worldwide basemap with imagery

I really like the Oregon series touch screen. It's a superior interface and I recommend it highly instead of the Colorado series models. The touchscreen really is a joy to use.

Garmin nuvi 205 review The Garmin nuvi 205 is one of Garmin's newest entry level navigators. Like the rest of the 2x5 series, it comes with features previously unavailable in the nuvi line or found only in high-end models. Before we get into the details, let's look at the basics. The 205 sports a 3.5" touch screen and includes pre-loaded maps of the entire U.S. except Alaska. It does not feature text-to-speech, so you'll hear "drive one-half mile, then turn left" instead of "drive one-half mile, then turn left on Oak Street." Compare prices on the Garmin nuvi 205 Step up to the nuvi 205W, and you'll get the same feature set on a wider 4.3" screen. Another model, the nuvi 255 keeps the 3.5" screen, but adds text-to-speech and maps of Alaska and Canada, while the 255W offers these same features in a wide screen model. Whither Magellan? GPS Business News has a post up speculating that Magellan may abandon the PND market. They chronicle multiple leadership departures, a three year plummet in market share from 45% to 13%, and the cancellation of their booth at the recent IFA electronics show in Berlin. I have to admit I was surprised when Magellan made no new product announcements at IFA, traditionally the venue where manufacturers would announce new releases for the holiday shopping season. And Magellan has yet to come through on the promised Maestro Elite series announced way back in January, including the two-way connectivity unit dubbed the 5340+GPRS. It's sad to see the demise of what was once a highly respected brand, but there is no sign of a turn around in sight. And as I noted the other day, it's entirely possible that Navigon may pass them in the fourth quarter, moving into third place for GPS navigator sales in the U.S.
