Garmin nuMaps Guarantee

Numaps Garmin is also announcing its nüMaps Guarantee today, which will ensure that new owners of select Garmin personal navigation devices (PNDs) receive the most updated map available.

There has been a great deal of confusion over Garmin's policy on units purchased without the latest maps pre-loaded. Today's announcement is welcome news, if for no other reason than it formalizes their policy and we know what the rules are.

After a customer purchases a new nüvi or zūmo PND, they can check to see if they are eligible for a free map update simply by registering their unit at http://my.garmin.com within 60 days of the first use of their new PND. If new map data is available anytime during that 60-day period, the user can request and download the new data, free of charge, by following simple online prompts.

The nüMaps Guarantee program will begin on October 15, 2008. Anyone who first used their new nüvi or zūmo PND on August 17th or later will be eligible for a free map update – provided their unit is registered with Garmin and a new map is available within 60 days of the unit’s first use.

Garmin is announcing three new nüvi 2x5 models today, the nüvi 265T, 265WT and 275T. All the new models include text-to-speech, lifetime traffic and Bluetooth for hands-free calling. The nuvi 265WT (pictured above) bumps the screen size to 4.3", while the nuvi 275T includes maps of Europe as well as North America. All three models are slated to be available in the third quarter, so we should see them soon. What the SiRF patent dispute means for GPS receivers A U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) judge has recommended that the ITC "bar from importation into the U.S. infringing chips of SiRF Technology," including GPS devcies that have those chipsets in them. The chips have been found to infringe upon Broadcom's patents. The question I have is, how is this going to affect the GPS market? DigiTimes is reporting that Mitac, parent company of Mio, is going to stop using SiRF chipsets in the fourth quarter. I'm no GPS engineer, but here's my take on it. The changeover may be less painful for auto PND manufacturers, since auto devices have a little accuracy leeway due to their "lock to road" feature. For a handheld manufacturer like Magellan though, this could be quite problematic. Garmin, with all of its engineering resources, has struggled with the accuracy of non-SiRF chipsets in their eTrex-H series and Colorado models. And what is to become of the Garmin 60CSx, the popular SiRF-powered handheld that is probably the most accurate consumer unit on the market. Will Garmin have to put another chipset in it? Of course, another possibility is that SiRF will pony up licensing fees and make nice with Broadcom. C'mon you tech types...what do...
