Top ten GPS for June 2008

There were only minor changes in this month's top ten GPS list. The Garmin nuvi 200W and 760 bumped the TomTom GO 920 and Garmin StreetPilot c550 from the auto list. On the sport / handheld GPS side, the Venture HC pushed the DeLorme PN-20 out of the number 10 spot.

As usual, the rankings are based on the number of times the units' reviews have been read here on GPS Tracklog, which seems to be a pretty good indicator of the overall GPS market.

Garmin TOPO U.S. 24K goes nationwide UPDATE: The Mountain Central card (Colorado and Utah) has now been released. I knew something was up when Garmin named their last topo product with the soon to be dated moniker TOPO U.S. 2008. Now it's official, Garmin will be releasing 1:24,000 scale topo maps of at least the 48 contiguous United States, complete with routable roads and trails. Previously available only for some National Park areas, this software will be known as TOPO U.S. 24K. These will be available by region -- the Pacific Northwest (WA & OR) is already out, with California / Nevada scheduled to be available in July. The remainder of the U.S. is "coming soon." The maps will come pre-loaded on micro-SD cards with an SD card adapter at $99.99 a pop. I think they could come up with better screen shots if they tried. There's a discussion going on at Groundspeak.

Magellan Maestro 5310 review The Magellan Maestro 5310 is Magellan's first GPS with a 5" screen. It has preloaded maps of the U.S. and Canada, six million POIs and text-to-speech, so you'll hear "approaching right turn, Maple Street" instead of just "approaching right turn." It also features live traffic (which I did not test) and AAA TourBook information, which I'll discuss later in this review. It does not have Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use, nor does it utilize voice commands like the Maestro 4250. The 5" color touch screen means larger fonts and buttons, which are always a welcome addition to any GPS. Magellan's QuickSpell feature is here too, simplifying input by graying out invalid characters when spelling out an address.
