Upgrade your maps within 30 days of buying a GPS

UPDATE: Garmin has updated their policy with their nuMaps guarantee, which gives users 60 days to register their device. Follow the link for more details.

It appears that TomTom and Garmin have both adopted a formal policy of allowing free map upgrades within 30 days of registering a unit. Wait 31 days and you no longer qualify. Hence, I am recommending that anyone purchasing an auto GPS register their device immediately to see if they qualify for a free upgrade.

Your device may have the latest maps, or it may have been sitting on the shelf for sometime before it sold, during which a map update was released. So do yourself a favor and register your unit right away.

Garmin nuvi 2x5 series sports new look UPDATE: Read my hands-on Garmin nuvi 205W review. I also have pages up for the nuvi 205, nuvi 255 and nuvi 255W. The forthcoming Garmin nuvi 2x5 series has a new look, as can be seen above. For the first time, the nuvi lineup gets a "direction of next turn" indicator. Previously, you had to rely on the arrow on the map itself to show the turn direction. Since the indicator (in the upper left portion of screen) includes the distance to next turn, this allows for a third data field on the screen, which shows your current speed. Given the way Garmin does things, I doubt that this field can be customized. In other 2x5 news, GpsPasSion is reporting smoother and faster map redraws, along with some color choices available from certain retailers. The first of the nuvi 2x5 series are expected to be in retailers' hands in the next day or two.
