Tracking Santa's visit to your house in Google Earth

Google_earth_logo Travel By GPS and Geovative Solutions have partnered for some tracking fun on Christmas Eve. This year you can add a personal placemark so that your residence will show on Santa's itinerary. Better hurry though, the cut-off for placemark submission is December 23rd!

International maps for your Garmin GPS One of the more common questions I receive relates to international (non-U.S.) maps — where can I find maps of a particular country? There are actually many options, and I suspect that most people aren’t aware of them all. Some are even free. I’m going to focus on Garmin in this post, which has the greatest variety of international maps readily available, at least for any of the top selling GPS receiver brands in the U.S. Lets go through the options one by one... Garmin City Navigator international maps Created by Garmin, these products provide turn-by-turn routing. Some come in two versions, City Navigator or City Navigator NT. The NT maps use a different compression method and are generally compatible with newer units. A compatibility tool , to see which units they work with, is available on Garmin’s “On the Road” cartography page. Unfortunately, it isn’t always up to date. Each page below has a link to a coverage map; the image on the right shows the European coverage map. Free maps for your Garmin GPS Free user-generated U.S. and international maps This was originally intended as a follow up to my international maps for your Garmin GPS post. Yet those sticking closer to home should investigate this too -- the sources below include road maps of U.S. cities and some very nice topo maps of greater detail than you can find elsewhere. The image below is from a 1:24,000 scale Lake Tahoe map. Besides being free, these maps are often available for areas not covered by Garmin and other commercial providers. Unfortunately though, turn-by-turn routing is less likely to be found with these maps. One other thing before we get to sources of these maps -- they utilize the Garmin .img format, and will require some special techniques for loading them to your unit. More on that below.
