Top 10 GPS for July 2007

Here are the top 10 sport / handheld and top ten auto GPS receivers for July. There's been a bit of a shake up in the rankings this month as new units move in. I'm especially impressed with the strong performance of the Mio C520. On the handheld side, the Vista HCx and Legend HCx both ranked well, despite being released only part way through the month.

The rankings below are based on the number of times the units' reviews have been read here on GPS Tracklog, which seems to be a pretty good indicator of the overall GPS market.

TomTom GO 720 review UPDATE: This unit has been replaced by the TomTom GO 730. I've been trying out a TomTom GO 720 for the past few weeks, and I am quite impressed with it. I'll get into the details of my review shortly, but first, here are a few notes about features... The TomTom GO 720 has attracted a lot of attention as the first unit to incorporate TomTom's new Map Share technology, allowing users to update certain aspects of its maps. Beyond that, the 720 sports a 4.3" touch screen, Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use, MP3 player, and a built-in FM transmitter. You can even control your iPod via the 720 (an accessory cable must be purchased separately). The unit has text-to-speech so it calls out street names -- that way you'll get "turn left on Highland Drive" instead of just "turn left." An optional traffic receiver allows for live traffic info on screen. While TomTom doesn't state the number of points of interest (POIs), the database seems similar to those touting six million. Step up to the TomTom GO 920T and you'll get the traffic receiver included, voice commands, a remote control and what TomTom calls Enhanced Positioning Technology (EPT)....

Playing MP3s while navigating with the Mio C520 When I reviewed the Mio DigiWalker C520, I said you couldn't play MP3s while navigating. I was wrong. A reader commented on the post this weekend, saying he had tried the unit at Circuit City, and it would play MP3s while navigating. Another reader, Al, commented yesterday, saying that the Mio website shows how to do it. The buttons weren't exactly the same as he reported; perhaps it was for a different model, but it does work. From the MP3 screen, just press the "Minimize" button, circled in red, as shown. I don't know how I missed that, but it's great that you guys have got my back! I've updated the Mio C520 review and my nuvi vs. Mio post accordingly.
