The Garmin nuvi 200W is a wide screen version of the entry-level nuvi 200. This is still a very basic unit, albeit with a 4.3" touch screen instead of the 3.5" screen found on the 200. Like all 200-series nuvis, this GPS navigator has an internal antenna, for a sleeker design than older nuvis that bore the flip-up antenna.
UPDATE: A similar but newer model, the nuvi 205W, adds quite a few features, and has occasionally been selling for a little less than the 200W.
200-series units also include 6 million points of interest (POIs), voice-prompted directions, picture viewer, calculator, currency converter, unit converter and world clock. The Garmin Lock security feature is provided as well.

There are (of course) some things missing from the 200 series that you'll get with more advanced nuvis -- an MP3 player, the option of adding live traffic info, and the ability to call out upcoming street names. With the nuvi 200W you'll get "turn left in 500 feet" rather than "turn left on Highway One." If you want that, a good choice might be the nuvi 350 or the nuvi 260, though neither of those are wide-screen models. To compare other nuvis, check out our Garmin nuvi comparison chart.

I just returned a TomTom One XL for the Nuvi 200W. While I lose the bluetooth and custom voices, the screen is so much better and responsive. You can also see this screen much more clearly when sun shines right on the screen. The battery life is much better on the Nuvi (5 hours vs. 2 hours). Another issue is that the TomTom speaker vibrated/rattled at volume levels over 65%. That means you can't hear it over any music. I also find the color schemes of the Garmin to be more easy to follow when browsing the maps. The actual maps are much smoother than the One XL. For example, the edges and resolution are more like Google Maps. Anyway, it is a shame because I liked the One XL overall. The TomTom Home software makes is much easier to find stuff for your One XL.
Anyway, there is a voices folder on this Garmin Nuvi. Is there any site that makes custom voices for a Garmin device. The files are in a different format (or at least have a different extension). Jill is nice, but I liked Mr. T better. ;-)
