New Garmin handheld rebates and what they may mean

60csx Garmin announced three new handheld GPS rebates today. The first is a $50 rebate (PDF) on the Garmin 60Cx and 60CSx, good from July 28 to December 31, 2007. Speculation on what this means follows below.

The other two rebates are good only at Dick's Sporting Goods retail locations. One is a $30 rebate (PDF) on the eTrex Legend Exploration Pack, valid from July 29 to December 31, 2007. The other is a $30 rebate (PDF) on the new eTrex Venture HC Adventure Pack Bundle. That promotion runs from August 1, 2007 to August 1, 2008.

The most interesting rebate here is the one on the 60 series. Perhaps this tells us that Garmin will be introducing a new high-end handheld line for the holidays. If so, we may see a product announcement at the Outdoor Retailer trade show next week, competing with an expected announcement from Magellan. What electronic goodies might Garmin add? Options include pre-loaded topo maps, a tri-axial compass, color satellite imagery, personal locater beacon and/or a weather radio receiver. Drool.

The usual Garmin rebate limitations apply: Rebate coupons are not valid for purchases made at auctions and rebate coupons are redeemable only by residents of the U.S. and Canada.

Magellan to introduce new handheld line I just got an email saying that Magellan will announce a new line of handheld GPS units at the Outdoor Retailer trade show early next month. The wording makes it sound like they may be introducing a successor to their eXplorist ine. Magellan will introduce the units at Outdoor Retailer's Open Air Demo on August 7 and 8. They also say they "will announce partnerships that will change the landscape of the handheld GPS category." Marketing hyperbole? Probably, but time will tell. TomTom GO 720 review UPDATE: This unit has been replaced by the TomTom GO 730. I've been trying out a TomTom GO 720 for the past few weeks, and I am quite impressed with it. I'll get into the details of my review shortly, but first, here are a few notes about features... The TomTom GO 720 has attracted a lot of attention as the first unit to incorporate TomTom's new Map Share technology, allowing users to update certain aspects of its maps. Beyond that, the 720 sports a 4.3" touch screen, Bluetooth for hands-free cell phone use, MP3 player, and a built-in FM transmitter. You can even control your iPod via the 720 (an accessory cable must be purchased separately). The unit has text-to-speech so it calls out street names -- that way you'll get "turn left on Highland Drive" instead of just "turn left." An optional traffic receiver allows for live traffic info on screen. While TomTom doesn't state the number of points of interest (POIs), the database seems similar to those touting six million. Step up to the TomTom GO 920T and you'll get the traffic receiver included, voice commands, a remote control and what TomTom calls Enhanced Positioning Technology (EPT)....
