GPS Tracklog initiates coverage of Mio

MiologoI'm pleased to announce that GPS Tracklog will initiate it's coverage of Mio later this morning, with a hands-on review of the Mio C520. I've been trying to contact Mio for some time now to secure a review unit, to no avail, so I finally broke down and bought one.

I'd like to review the Mio C220 as well, though I don't think my wife will look too kindly on me buying another GPS so soon! So I'll keep trying to track down a media contact at Mio, or I'll post a compilation of other reviews.

Mio has jumped from out of nowhere to become a top player in the GPS market in the U.S. Much of their success came from them having the Black Friday star from last holiday season, the Mio C310x, which at the time was retailing for as low as $150.

You'll see from my review that I was quite impressed with the Mio DigiWalker C520. I'm hoping to get a post up ASAP comparing the Mio C520 with the Garmin nuvi line.

TMC expands to 19 new cities and begins transmitting via HD radio Clear Channel Radio’s Total Traffic Network today announced that it has begun transmitting traffic data via HD Radio in 48 of the largest U.S. metropolitan areas, adding that specially equipped receivers should be available by year's end. The HD broadcasts will allow for more data and pave the way for additional servcies. GPS Business News speculated on that today, saying: The larger bandwidth in the HD radio signal is expected to enable additional services including weather forecast updates and regional point of interest (POI) updates. With HD Radio Clear Channel will compete with the Microsoft MSN Direct technology that enables traffic, gas price, weather and movies times on the Garmin Nuvi 680 and StreetPilot c580. Clear Channel also announced that 19 new cities have been to the Traffic Message Channel data service. They are Albany, NY; Albuquerque, NM; Birmingham, AL; Columbia, SC; Fort Myers, FL; Louisville, KY; Omaha, NE; Portsmouth/Manchester, NH; Richmond, VA; Rochester, NY; Sarasota, FL; Springfield, MA; Syracuse, NY; Toledo, OH; Tucson, AZ; Worcester, MA and Toronto, ON; Ottawa, ON and Montreal, QE in Canada.

Mio C520 review I've spent the last ten days or so trying out the Mio C520 , also known as the Mio DigiWalker C520. This one is going to give Garmin a run for their money. I was impressed from the moment I took the unit out of the box - this GPS receiver looks great and feels great. It offers high-end features at a very reasonable price point. Before we get into the details, lets talk about the basic feature set. The Mio C520 comes pre-loaded with TeleAtlas maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. It has a thin, flat form factor, 4.3" wide touch screen, SiRFstar III chipset, 6 million POIs, an MP3 player, Bluetooth for hands free cell phone use, and can be upgraded for live traffic. The C520 features text-to-speech, so you'll get "turn left on Highway 128" instead of just "turn left." Heck, this device can even play videos!
