Last week, Engadget ran a post about the TimeTools T1000, a device that allows you to sync your PC clock with GPS time. But if you have a Garmin GPS, you may not need to go out and buy an expensive device to do this. First of all, why would you want to sync your PC clock with your GPS? Remember, GPS satellites have atomic clocks on board, so your navigation device is likely the most accurate time piece you own.
If you have a Garmin, there is a good chance that you have their MapSource software. If you bought a device with pre-loaded maps, such as a nuvi, my understanding is that you can request a free MapSource City Navigator DVD from Garmin tech support. This will allow you to plan trips on your PC, create waypoints, etc.
On to the how to. Open MapSource, connect your GPS and turn it on. Then go to Utilities and select Set PC Clock. You'll get a window like the one on the right.
As always, this worked like a charm with my Garmin 60CSx, but I couldn't get it to work with my Garmin nuvi 660. Instead, I was greeted with the window below. I updated my nuvi's firmware, but still no luck. Maybe it's a Vista issue. I'm hoping someone else with a nuvi can try it and see if they can get it to work. Please add a comment below if you try.
