Garmin nuvi 200W and 250W - new wide screen models

A couple of weeks ago, we learned that Garmin was adding two wide-screen versions of its nuvi 200 series line in Europe. Today we received word that the nuvi 200W and nuvi 250W will also be available in the U.S.  The new units appear to offer the same feature set as the nuvi 200 and nuvi 250, with the addition of a 4.3" screen.

These are entry level models with no frills. The biggest drawback is the lack of text to speech, so that when you approach an upcoming turn, you'll get "turn left in 500 feet," instead of "turn left on South Broadway in 500 feet."

Both units are expected to be available in July 2007 at a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $499.99 for the nuvi 200W and $549.99 for the nuvi 250W.

Garmin will also offer nuvi 200 series products with regional specific coverage for Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and Brazil.

A week ago I reported on TomTom Map Share which, in their words, "allows TomTom users to easily improve their maps as soon as they spot changes in the roads with a few touches on the screen of their device." Today, yourNAV is reporting that Map Share may fall quite a bit short of expectations, saying that only five types of corrections will be allowed: (un)Block a street Reverse driving direction Change a street name Add a missing Point Of Interest (POI) Change a Point Of Interest (POI) They do say that TomTom is planing a future version of Map Share, which will allow the addition of roads. A close reading of the original press release reveals no promise of adding roads at this stage, but it is easy to assume that this is an included feature. Oh well, it's a start.

GPS theft prevention with GadgetTrak GadgetTrak, an Oregon company, has expanded the range of GPS devices they can protect from theft. Or more accurately, help recover if they are stolen. Their system works when the thief, or someone he sells the stolen unit to, connects the device to a PC. The IP address, general location, computer name, user name, ISP and host name are relayed to you in an email. Of course, this doesn't guarantee recovery. Here's what GadgetTrak has to say about that: "Currently the GadgetTheft.com service is available to provide you information only. We are not affiliated with any law enforcement agency, nor are we attorneys. We provide information that may assist in the recovery of the device. Also keep in mind that sometimes the device may have been sold to an innocent party, so the information sent to you may not always be the thief. The service is also not a replacement for insurance of the device, or reporting the device stolen to the authorities. We will however will assist you and law enforcment with the neccesary information to get your device back (sic)." The following GPS units have been tested and are supported: Garmin nuvi 200, 250, 270, 350, 360, 370,...
