TomTom has announced a wide-screen version of their popular TomTom ONE -- the TomTom ONE XL. Expected to be available in May 2007, the American version of the TomTom ONE XL will have pre-loaded maps of the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico.

The XL improves upon the ONE with a 4.3" screen. It is also ready for real-time traffic services via a subscription to TomTom Traffic or the purchase of an RDS-TMC traffic receiver. The TomTom ONE XL will list for $399.95.

Garmin to use SiRFstarIII chip in nuvi 200 series GPS Business News is reporting that Garmin will be using the SiRFstar III LP chipset in their upcoming nuvi 200 series, rather than a MediaTek product. This directly contradicts Craig Ellison's trashing of the nuvi 250 on PCMag.com, for losing satellite lock indoors, a lame excuse for his 3 star review (IMHO): I also noticed that my 250 test unit did not use a state-of-the-art SiRFStarIII receiver module such as the one found in the 350. Garmin describes the 250's receiver, without a brand name, as simply a "sensitive GPS receiver," which sounds to me as if the company has cut costs on it. That might be why the 250 displayed fewer signal-strength bars and lost satellite lock indoors more easily than the 350. That said, I didn't experience reception problems on my road tests. Now maybe he had a pre-production unit with a different chipset. Then again, if it was a MediaTek, they've been getting pretty good reviews. Hopefully, Garmin will clarify this in the near future. Magellan Maestro 3100 and 3140 UPDATE: Read our Magellan Maestro 3100 review and Magellan Maestro 3140 review. Magellan has announced two more members of their Maestro series, the Magellan Maestro 3100 and 3140. Both are based on the thin Magellan Maestro 4000 series models, which have a 4" screen. The 3000 series will have a smaller form factor, with a 3.5" screen. Both the 3100 and 3140 will sport the SiRFstar III chipset. According to Magellan, “Without compromising the quality and richness of experience that Magellan stands for, we have been able to pack into an even smaller form factor premium features found in the Maestro 4000 series. These include text-to-speech, full map coverage, AAA travel information, and more. In addition, they are the first auto navigation solutions on the market that use the new Samsung 2443 processor for rapid routing." TigerGPS.com already has product pages posted, so the links below go there. The Magellan Maestro 3100 includes pre-loaded maps of the contiguous United States, but according to TigerGPS, it only has 750,000 points of interest (POIs).
