1:24,000 scale Colorado topo maps for Garmin receivers

24kcoloradotopomaps Above the Timber is about to release DVD's of 1:24,000 scale topo maps of the Colorado Rockies for Garmin GPS receivers. I call them 1:24K scale maps even though that is a bit of a misnomer. These are digital maps, so the scale changes at each zoom level. However, the data on the screen is based on USGS 1:24,000 scale topo maps, and they show 40 foot contour intervals, as seen in the image shown here.

These are much more detailed than Garmin's 1:100K-based U.S. Topo maps. And while Garmin does have a 1:24K scale product, it is limited (for the most part) to certain National Park areas.

The Colorado Topo Maps DVD will go on sale around May 1, at a special introductory price of $79.95. While you can “make your own maps,” the process is a bit laborious, so if you are a back country enthusiast in Colorado, this is a pretty good deal.

Garmin and TomTom to make cell phones? DigiTimes is reporting that Garmin has held talks with Taiwan-based handset maker Compal Communications, speculating that Garmin will enter the cell phone handset market. The article goes on to say, following the introduction of the TomTom GO 715 with a SIM card, that this raised "market speculation that the company (TomTom) eventually may move into the GPS handset segment." Based in Taiwan, DigiTimes has a good track record, so I'm inclined to take this seriously. Such a move could make sense in many ways, allowing PND manufacturers to go after the cell phone handset market. Just think what an intuitive Garmin interface for a cell phone might look like -- they have a deep knowledege base to draw upon. And they might make money off patents they could develop, even if the handsets don't sell that well. Traditional PNDs could also use cellular networks to offer connectivity, ala Dash.

Garmin to use SiRFstarIII chip in nuvi 200 series GPS Business News is reporting that Garmin will be using the SiRFstar III LP chipset in their upcoming nuvi 200 series, rather than a MediaTek product. This directly contradicts Craig Ellison's trashing of the nuvi 250 on PCMag.com, for losing satellite lock indoors, a lame excuse for his 3 star review (IMHO): I also noticed that my 250 test unit did not use a state-of-the-art SiRFStarIII receiver module such as the one found in the 350. Garmin describes the 250's receiver, without a brand name, as simply a "sensitive GPS receiver," which sounds to me as if the company has cut costs on it. That might be why the 250 displayed fewer signal-strength bars and lost satellite lock indoors more easily than the 350. That said, I didn't experience reception problems on my road tests. Now maybe he had a pre-production unit with a different chipset. Then again, if it was a MediaTek, they've been getting pretty good reviews. Hopefully, Garmin will clarify this in the near future.
