Picking a low-cost mapping handheld GPS

"Hello; before I go bugging some sales people, perhaps you can give me some direction (pun intended) on gps units. I've been getting lost frequently on some of my bike trips outside of the city. (car drivers can't give directions for cyclists). I'm not looking to know my location down to a few yards, or know elevation, or travel internationally. I'm just looking for a unit that will display my location on a map and show nearest roads (and fire-roads) for Oregon. I would like to get this for less than $200."

Aaron, I'm going to go with the same unit I reccomend in my Handheld GPS Buyers Guide, the Garmin eTrex Legend. You can get this unit and Garmin's MapSource US TOPO for right around $200.

An alternative choice would be the Magellan eXplorist 210, but I believe you would end up spending a little more by the time you bought MapSend Topo.

Consumer Reports rates GPS receivers UPDATE: Check out my take on Consumer Reports' October 2007 GPS ratings. The August 2006 issue of Consumer Reports rates portable GPS navigation devices for cars. Garmin won top honors, placing number one and two, and coming in with the only best buy. Listed below are the top six, which were followed for the most part by, ahem, lesser brands (Navman, Cobra, Clarion, Lowrance, Mio and Pharos). Garmin nuvi 350 Garmin StreetPilot 2730 Magellan RoadMate 760 TomTom GO 300 TomTom GO 700 Garmin StreetPilot i5 (A CR Best Buy) Unfortunately, these are all last generation units. Compare these to the Top Ten list I posted yesterday and you'll see that only the StreetPilot 2730 and nuvi show up on both lists. GPS-enabled marriage proposal From Luxembuerg, Wisconsin comes news that Brian Rueckl has proposed to Stacy Martin via a one-acre message carved into a cornfiled. Earlier this week, Brian took Stacy for a plane ride to see the proposal. Rueckl used a GPS to lay out the marriage proposal. In case you're wondering, she said yes.
