The research firm Synovate has released some interesting figures about the market for GPS devices. A little dated, much of the data compares 2005 with 2004:
- Online purchases increased to 23.3% of all GPS sales.
- 20% more consumers purchased GPS receivers in 2005 than in 2004.
- Purchases by women made up 21% of the market, versus 14.5% in 2004.
Other notes:
- 70% of the market is in auto navigation devices. The remainder is for outdoor recreation.
- 90% of purchases are by first-time buyers.
Here's an interesting quote:
"Nine new GPS brands were active in the United States in 2005, though the top two brands, Garmin and Magellan, continued to own about 75 percent market share, Synovate added."
This will probably look very different next year, considering TomTom's ascendance in the marketplace.
