Only 1/3 of 911 call centers can receive GPS coordinate info

Buried in an article today on emergency services was this shocker...

"Verizon said about one-third of 911 call centers have upgraded their systems and can receive the location information from callers using mobile phones, PDAs, smartphones and other wireless devices."

The article is from an Australian website, but the figures appear to be for the U.S. This just totally blew me away. I had no idea the figure was so low. The FCC has required GPS capabilities in 95% of cell phones in the U.S. Sounds like they need to work on the other end too!

Two fatalities in GPS treasure hunt This just came in from Kern County, California. I'll try to follow up with more information as it becomes available. I'm including the headline, but surely they did not drive over a cliff because their GPS told them to... GPS game: Men drive off cliff, die Treasure hunt turns fatal "Two men, 35- and 41-years old, were killed after their 1991 Jeep Cherokee plunged down a steep cliff in a rugged and remote area. The men were participating in a Global Positioning System treasure hunt that originated in San Bernardino County. After they failed to report in at a checkpoint, a missing person's report was filed with the Kern County Sheriff's Department on Saturday. The crash site was located early Monday morning. According to the collision report, the 35-year-old male was located outside of the vehicle. The 41-year-old was located in the passenger seat with his safety belt on.
