Garmin GPSMap 60Cx Review

Gpsmap_60cx The Garmin GPSMap 60Cx is an updated version of the GPSMap 60C. This new unit comes with the SiRFSTAR III chipset, which has been getting rave reviews for its fast acquisition time and solid coverage under canopy, in urban canyons and even indoors!

The other significant upgrade is that the 60Cx no longer utilizes the unit's built in memory for MapSource maps, but loads them to a microSD card instead (the unit comes with a 64 MB card). This means you have unlimited map storage capability, plus you can use some of the newer MapSource software that is available only on SD cards. Stepping up to the 60CSx adds a barometric altimeter and electronic compass.

Windows Live Local demos street-side views Microsoft today posted a preview of the street-side imagery it will be using in Windows Live Local. It's a little funky to use. I had better control using the keyboard than the mouse, an experience shared by Adena over at All Points Blog. A nice in-depth article is posted at ExtremeTech, including a fairly detailed discussion of how Facet Technology produces the imagery. The imagery displayed by Microsoft will initially cover only San Francisco and Seattle, even though Facet Technology has an extensive imagery library. Another site offering street-level imagery is A9, but they only show store fronts, and don't offer the driving perspective. Right now, all this technology is more like crude video games and eye candy for cartography freaks. TomTom Go 510, 710 and 910 TomTom has announced the release of three new TomTom GO models - the 510, 710 and 910. All three models sport a wider, 4" screen, hands-free calling and come with a home docking station. TomTom is also touting their improved GPS performance -- no word yet on whether this means that they use the SiRFSTARIII chipset. Here are a few other details on these models, expected to be available by mid-April. The 510 has iPod compatibility, pre-loaded maps of the US and Canada and a 1 GB SD card. The 710 will be available only in Europe. The 910 is being billed as "the first ever portable navigation device featuring multi-continental map coverage including the US, Canada and the whole of Europe at no additional charge."
