Garmin announced today a new, low-end addition to the eTrex Cx line, the Venture Cx. A significant upgrade over the older eTrex Venture, the Cx unit adds a color screen, USB interface, auto-routing capabilities and expandable memory via a micro-SD card slot. Like the other eTrex Cx units though, the Venture does not come with the SiRFSTAR III chipset. That might be the only reason to consider a higher end model though. Otherwise, at an estimated $249.99 list price, this unit is a deal. The eTrex venture Cx is expected to be available for sale almost immediately. Garmin lists the availability date as March 2006.
EDIT: An added note here...Unlike the higher level eTrex x-series models, the Venture Cx does not come with a micro-SD card, only a slot for one. It is also unclear at this point whether or not you will be able to transfer maps from CD to the unit. These details are currently being discussed in this Venture Cx thread at Groundspeak.
