GPS Device and Application of the Year

Tomtom_go_700 Engadget has announced the winners of their GPS Device and Application of the Year awards. The winning device is the popular TomTom GO 700 (pictured at left). And, no surprise here, Google Earth is the application of the year.

Free maps of Japan for Garmin GPS receivers Via Groundspeak comes news that a map developer has created and is giving away free maps of Japan for Garmin GPS receivers. These aren't routable maps with points-of-interest, but they do have roads, and much more detail than Garmin's WorldMap . Garmin has limited international coverage - North America , Australia, Western Europe , the Middle East, New Zealand and South Africa . Something many people don't know though, is that Garmin authorizes third-party developers to produce maps for other areas, including parts of South America, Eastern Europe, Russia and Korea. I've heard that Garmin is reluctant to enter into third-party agreements for areas that could be profitable, so perhaps we'll ultimately see Garmin MapSource products for places like Japan and Mexico.
