Via Groundspeak comes news that a map developer has created and is giving away free maps of Japan for Garmin GPS receivers. These aren't routable maps with points-of-interest, but they do have roads, and much more detail than Garmin's WorldMap.
Garmin has limited international coverage - North America, Australia, Western Europe, the Middle East, New Zealand and South Africa. Something many people don't know though, is that Garmin authorizes third-party developers to produce maps for other areas, including parts of South America, Eastern Europe, Russia and Korea. I've heard that Garmin is reluctant to enter into third-party agreements for areas that could be profitable, so perhaps we'll ultimately see Garmin MapSource products for places like Japan and Mexico.
