A week ago, I saw a post in Cartography, noting pfly's post on mapping toponymy.
I commented, saying:
Very cool. One that struck me when I moved from the Southern Appalachians to Northern California was gap vs. pass. I figure it an east vs. west thing, but would love to see visual evidence of that. Nice work pfly!
Lo and behold, I see that he has posted a new map, showing this very thing. In addition to gaps and passes, you can also see what parts of the U.S. favor the terms notch and saddle.
Cool. Next maybe someone will do run, ravine, cleft, canyon, gulch, and any other sort of thing that means a water worn declivity of any length.
